A real party atmosphere is guaranteed as the Diamond League comes to town for the event on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 August. With its two day format the Aviva London Grand Prix comprises of more IAAF Diamond League disciplines than any other event on the world circuit.
The IAAF Diamond League is a new programme of world class events held across 14 cities at different locations around the world. The league encompasses 32 individual event disciplines, with a points scoring ‘Diamond Race’ which runs throughout the 14 meeting series.
The winner of which will have shown season long consistency to earn the unchallenged honour of being the World No1. The officials have got their speed guns at the ready as the world’s fastest man this year Asafa Powell is gearing up for a head-to-head clash with Tyson Gay in the 100m.
In fact, with the entry of the Aviva London Grand Prix in to the IAAF Diamond League more world athletics stars than ever before will be heading to London ensuring head-to-heads from many of the sport’s biggest names.
Olympic Champion, and former London Youth Games competitor, Christine Ohuruogu takes on the reigning World Champion Sanya Richards-Ross in the hotly anticipated 400m.
Having enjoyed a well documented rivalry with Richards-Ross at the major championships in recent years, Ohuruogu came out on top with an outstanding victory and world lead time at the Beijing Games in 2008, but Richards-Ross dominated on the world stage 12 months later in Berlin, with an exceptional gold medal winning performance.
They’ll both have to watch out for Richards-Ross US team mate, World 200m Champion Alyson Felix who is also part of this incredible line up. World indoor and outdoor High Jump champion Blanka Vlasic will also be attending, continuing her personal pursuit to break the high jump world record of 2.09m set by Stefka Kostadinova back in 1987.
Her best attempt to date was 2.08m set in Zagreb last August, and she has already cleared 2.06m in February, which suggests the Croatian is in scintillating form.
The Aviva London Grand Prix is a highlight in the summer events calendar for many Londoners and their families. The weekend has been graced with glorious sunshine for the last two years which has added to the carnival atmosphere that the event generates.
There’s plenty to do outside of the scheduled athletics including have-a-go activities & plenty of competitions all situated in scenic parkland which lends itself perfectly to the fun and games that ensue – all for free!
