Basketball is America's favourite sport and the NBA, the premier basketball club competition, is watched by millions across the world. 

Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world with over 450 million people playing the sport around the globe. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the pinnacle of the sport, boasting such global superstars as Shaquille O'Neal, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant. Over 44 European players play in the NBA, including GB's Luol Deng (Chicago Bulls) and Pops Mensah-Bonsu (Toronto Raptors), both of whom grew up playing basketball in London. LYG is proud to partner with the NBA for the second consecutive year.

Basketball is also one of the most anticipated sports of the Olympic Games. It's an incredibly fast sport and players need to be agile and very fit.  Although it is oten seen as a game for tall people, the point guard's greatest strength will be his or her speed.

The London Youth Games basketball event is very competitive with some of the Capital's best players taking part.  The "Final Four" during Finals weekend at Crystal Palace is one of the spectacles of the Games.


Did you know?

  • London's Luol Deng is the captain of the world famous Chicago Bulls. He took part in the London Youth Games when he was 13.
  • Luol Deng and the Chicago Bulls are coming to London in October 2009 to play a game against the Utah Jazz. LYG participants will have the unique opportunity to get involved in the ‘NBA Europe Live Tour’
  • The Great Britain’s men’s team qualified for the European Championships for the first time ever and will play against Europe’s best in Poland in September.

Competition Facts

  • Mini Games competition is a 3 on 3 mixed gender format with all 6 team members playing in each match.
  • There are seperate scoring competitions for male and female in the Main Games.
  • Main Games format is 5 a side with 4 quarters of 5 minutes each.

England Basketball is the Governing Body for the sport charged with development of the Grassroots game. In London this is delivered by London Basketball.
