Dear Stakeholder

London Youth Games is currently consulting the boroughs regarding the development of the Mini Games, the primary school age competitions within the London Youth Games, and we are seeking your views on its development.

Background

The London Youth Games is has been reviewing the programme of the Mini Games to support our objective of inspiring more young people to compete in sport. The funding of the London Youth Games is based on us growing participation to more than 50,000 and requires us to engage with National Governing Bodies and other partners including the Youth Sport Trust to ensure that our competitions fit their competition pathways and fit the development needs of athletes.

With this in mind, we have been asking two questions:

1) How can we grow the mini games programme to help achieve our participation goal?

2) How do we schedule the events to ensure they fit within the competition pathway to ensure the best sporting experience for the participants?

3) How do we ensure that we keep the large scale festival atmosphere to the Mini Games?

We understand that there are a number of issues that boroughs face with regards to their entry to the Mini Games – and that these issues vary widely across boroughs. Some of these are around both the boroughs’ budgets and the budget for delivering the Games, but many of the borough differences will depend on how you select and train teams, and the format and organisation competitions you have in your borough.

There are a number of common themes we are also hearing, which relate to the desire to move some competitions closer to when they take place in boroughs, to knit the calendar together with the schools competition calendar and to look to ensure sports are the right modified format for the age group.

These raise questions about a number of sports – e.g. basketball (time of year and indoor vs. Outdoor), athletics (should sportshall be in winter) – and the coming to the best answer across London will not be easy – but we value your input by completing the following survey – please pass this on to colleagues who you feel could provide a valuable input.
