Over the weekend, 370 young judokas from across the capital gathered at UEL SportsDock to take part in the London Youth Games Judo.

The exciting one-day judo event welcomed young Londoners aged 9 to 18, with each individual proudly representing one of 29 boroughs.

With gold, silver and bronze medals up for grabs, the competition saw both new and returning participants put their skills to the test, and the excitement was evident throughout the day.

The format

The competition was split into groups based on age and ability, with the skill level increasing throughout the day – showcasing the event’s inclusivity and diversity.

The day commenced with yellow belt level judokas and concluded with participants who were more advanced (between green and brown belts).

Speaking on the importance of the event, Brett, Team Manager of the London Borough of Greenwich said: “It means a lot to [young people]. It means that the people who are not at national level get to have a chance at their big competition – which is this one.”

LYG caters to all

The beauty of the London Youth Games is that every individual has a place in the competition despite their differences, background or ability. Olympic and Paralympic sports like judo are made accessible to all.

Jolene, London Borough of Merton participant shared an insight into her introduction to judo and how it benefits her visual impairment: “I didn’t do judo until I was twelve, I did football until I lost my sight and then I was told that judo would be good to do after that because it’s more accessible.”

Judo can be accessible to blind or visually impaired people as it involves close contact grappling from the outset, allowing athletes to sense their opponents and respond based on touch and movement.

When asked about the impact of the London Youth Games she said: “It’s a good competition to do. You get to be part of a team.”

Stories like Jolene’s are an example of our commitment to creating life-changing opportunities through sport, for young people in London to be involved in.

As the day came to a close, many athletes were awarded with a medal to recognise and celebrate their podium finish.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the event and a very well done to all the medallists!

Thanks to the BTO’s, Team Managers and Officials who supported us and the participants brilliantly on the day.

And a big thank you to our partners and supporters: British Judo, London Area Judo, with a special thank you to Liz our Competition Director and UEL Sports Dock.
