Hundreds of young participants benefit from LYG Athletics competition

On Saturday 21st June, over 240 participants gathered at Hillingdon Sport and Leisure Complex for London Youth Games Athletics (Open Games) Competition. Young people from 24 different boroughs came together to compete in events including: 100 meters, 200 meters, 800m (time trial), 1500m (time trial), High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, Javelin and Relay.
During the track events, participants showed determination, pushing themselves and having fun competing in their event against others across London. Many participants saw it as an opportunity to support their team mates in their events. The London Youth Games gives young people a chance to compete and interact with other competitors in its welcoming and encouraging environment.
One of Britian’s greatest athletes – a four-time Olympian, two-time world Champion, and Olympic gold medalist Christine Ohuruogu made an appearance to cheer on LYG participants, inspire the participants with a short speech and present the medals on the day.
Born and raised in Newham, just a mile from the Olympic Stadium, Christine competed in the London Youth Games as a young person prior to her successful international athletics career. Her many accolades include being crowned World Champion in the 400m in 2007, then making history becoming the first British woman to win Olympic gold in the 400m in 2008. She then made history again when she became the first British female athlete to win two World Championship gold medals in the 400m in 2013.
