Marina's Story

Marina runs

I have been involved with LYG for over 12 years, having started after the London 2012 Olympics. I went on to spend six months as a volunteer co-ordinator intern and have volunteered in various roles, mainly on the event team. I’m also a regular at the annual Cross Country event.

LYG has been instrumental in supporting and developing my career. The skills, experiences and people that I have connected with have led to a new career in volunteer management and development, alongside freelancing in the mass events world.

The opportunities LYG volunteering have provided have led to great friendships, furthered my own involvement in sport (particularly running and outdoor swimming) and are an important element of my mental and physical wellbeing.

Being physically active is a vital element of how I live my life. Regular volunteering helps with keeping active and taking part in sport or activities with friends, whether that’s walking, swimming or running. I find an easy way to fit daily exercise into a busy day is to extend a walk home, getting off the train a stop earlier or taking the long route. Having friends or a group to exercise with helps too, but I also value exercising with people I don’t know and building friendships with new people.

In May, I’m taking on the Hackney Half Marathon to raise money to benefit London Youth Games Foundation.

Every contribution, big or small, makes an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution it means a lot to me and the young people LYG helps.

I’ve already raised £200 and I’m aiming for £500 – if you’re able to support, it would mean a lot!
