Shani's Story

black female in helmet, BMX rider Shani

Being a girl in a male dominated sport, I have had to overcome gender stereotypes. But that’s never stopped me from achieving!

I started riding when I was 8 years old. Having begun my journey at London Youth Games, I have gone on to compete and win in national and international tournaments.

I dream of becoming a professional BMX rider and have created a pathway for myself to follow in the footsteps of Peckham teammate and LYG alumnus Kye Whyte.

“I’ve made some great friends and I love feeling part of a wider community.”

I’ve raced the boys and I’ve beat them

BMX has helped build my confidence and self-belief. It has taught me to be stronger in myself. It has also given me the opportunity to make new friends and become part of a wider community.

I look forward to the London Youth Games each year and I am proud to put on the Southwark t-shirt to represent my borough. I race with and against my clubmates and I am able to gain valuable experience for future competitions.
