The Merton Saints BMX Club was buzzing with activity on Saturday 7th June, when more than 190 young riders from 25 boroughs across London took to the track for the London Youth Games BMX competition. With adrenaline high and medals on the line, each competitor came ready to race hard and represent their borough with pride.

Kids of all ages participated in this action-packed, fast-paced event, ranging from novice riders to experienced riders. Up to eight riders competed in three “motos” in each race, receiving points based on their results and moving on to the finals.

There was a lot of enthusiasm and eagerness throughout the day – not just to win, but also to obtain useful experience in a sport that several of the riders were experiencing for the first time.

One parent from the Brixton BMX club praised the opportunity the event provided. “The event is great for kids that don’t have race experience. It’s great what you’re doing – this event is for everyone.”

Councillor Cooper-Marbiah reflected on how important the London Youth Games are to the borough of Merton. “London Youth Games BMX in Merton is very important to us here in Merton, because we are London’s first borough of sport. And so we are trying to encourage everyone to be active in different kinds of sport.”

Congratulations to the overall borough winners who won the overall group standings after a long and hard-fought day of competition:

Gold: Southwark

Silver: Hackney

Bronze: Lambeth

Thank you to all the staff who ensured the event ran smoothly and thanks to the BTO’s and Team Managers who supported the day.
