RICHMOND STEAL THE SHOW ON OPENING DAY OF 2018 SUMMER FINALS
Richmond racked up the silverware on school games finals day as the 2018 London Youth Games summer finals officially opened.
The South-West London borough topped the medal standings in four of the seven events on display, with gold medals arriving in Quadkids Athletics, Basketball 3×3, KS2 & KS3 Gymnastics.
With faultless routines in both gymnastics events, KS2 Team Manager Miriam Hunt was unexpectedly delighted with the performance of her Trafalgar Juniors pupils.
“I was really optimistic but we didn’t win for the vault and we didn’t win for the body management so I was get a bit nervous, but then we won the floor so in the end it was unexpected, we worked hard though,” said Miriam.
“Teamwork was the key, I got them in at eight o’clock in the mornings to do lots of practice so every credit to mums and dads for dropping them early in the mornings.
“We’ve got some very good gymnasts in Richmond so we have a lot of high hopes in the future.”
With Team GB stars Christine Ohuruogu, Zoe Smith and Shannon and Cheriece Hylton, all former competitors at the London Youth Games, in attendance, we caught an early glimpse of many future athletes hoping to follow in their footsteps.
Sutton, Merton and Barnet emerged as the other overall victors of the day, their successes coming in RFL Rugby, Tri Golf and Mini Red Tennis respectively.
